HypnoBirthing® is returning birthing to the beautiful peaceful experience nature intended.
Learn techniques for safer, easier and more comfortable birthing through guided imagery, visualisation and special breathing |
Around a further 20-25% only require something mild, like gas and air.
The remaining 5-10% usually fall into what we call 'special circumstances' where medical intervention is required. However, many mothers still tell us that HypnoBirthing® really helped - even if they were induced, or ended up with a caesarean.

easier more comfortable birthing
where they felt more in control

The method was founded by Marie Mongan in 1989 and is inspired by the work of the English obstetrician Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, the father of natural childbirth.
Marie Mongan is a Clinical Hypnotherapist with an active practice in New Hampshire
There is no pathological reason for pain in childbirth. Fear and interventions cause the body to malfunction, then there is pain.
HypnoBirthing® teaches women to actually relax their body to work the way it was designed to work, based on the belief that childbirth is a natural healthy event, not a medical emergency.
HypnoBirthing® teaches women to use self hypnosis, relaxation and special slow breathing techniques to keep discomfort from occurring in the first place.

-
Breathing techniques that actually help the birth (and it's not the panting that most people think they have to do. Think about it - why would anyone want to hyperventilate during labour?)
-
-
How to reduce your risk of needing an episiotomy during birth with a stunningly simple massage technique
-
How to be confident and informed when dealing with the medical staff - when to question, what to ask...and when it's time to let them take charge
-
How to release any fears you might have about childbirth, regardless of where they come from
-
How to bring about your own easy start of labour with simple, natural techniques, if you go beyond your "estimated due date"
-
Most importantly, you'll know how to relax and stay calm and in control - regardless of what's happening around you

-
-
-
High number of comfortable, natural births with no technological assistance
-
A high rate of success in assisting breech-presented babies to turn into appropriate birthing position with the use of posture and hypnosis (in a study done at the University of Vermont of 100 women at 37 to 40 weeks, there was a 81% success rate with hypnosis)
-
Highly energized mothers in good spirits following births that are calm and gentle

Yes. We find that babies born using HypnoBirthing® tend to be calmer, feed better, sleep better and experience less trauma, because they are gently and calmly breathed into the world at their own pace.
Scientific research has also shown that the babies usually have higher Agpar scores as well (a measure of how well your baby is doing immediately after the birth, and then five minutes later.
Instead of your husband or partner being a helpless onlooker, they become a central part of the birthing process helping you to stay calm and focused on the techniques you've been taught.
As a result, the fathers feel proud to have been able to help, and to be an active part of the birth.
Imagine how close that makes them feel to you and the baby!
Effect of Hypnosis on length of labour
Hao et al in China measured the effect of nursing suggestions to labouring women and recommends that the conversation of the nurses be "controlled carefully for the purpose of advancing the birth process". This randomized control trial examined 60 first time mothers with a matched control group of 60 first time mothers and found a statistically significant reduction in the lengths of the first and second stages of labour.
Jenkins and Pritchard found a reduction of 3 hours for prim gravid women (from 9.3 hours to 6.4 hours) and 1 hour for multi gravid women (from 6.2 hours to 5.3 hours) for active labour (262 subjects and 600 controls). Pushing was statistically shorter for first time mothers (from 50 min to 37 min).
In a study that compared hypnosis and Lamaze training, 96 women chose between hypnosis (n=45) and Lamaze (n=51). The first stage of labour was shortened in the hypnosis group by 98 minutes for first time mothers and by 40 minutes for second time mothers. These women were more satisfied with labour and reported other benefits of hypnosis such as reduced anxiety and help with getting to sleep.
A British study found a statistically significant reduction in the length of labour of first and second time mothers: 70 hypnosis patients (6 h 21 min) compared to 70 relaxation patients (9 h 28 min) and 70 control group (9 h 45 min).
Mellegren noted a reduction of two to three hours of labour.
Abramson and Heron found a shorter first stage of labour for 100 women trained with hypnosis (by 3.23 hours) compared to a control group of 88 women. Forty-five Hypnosis for Childbirth clients (first time mothers) had an average of 4.5 hours for the active labour, a significant reduction compared to the usual 12 hours.
In a British study, 55% of 45 patients (first and second time mothers) required no medication for pain relief.
In the other non-hypnosis groups, only 22% of 90 women required no medication.
Two research pieces reported on 1,000 consecutive births: 850 women used hypnotic analgesia resulting in 58 percent rate of no medication. Five other research pieces reported an incidence of 60 to 79 percent non-medicated births.
A retrospective survey notes an epidural rate of 18 percent in Southern Ontario, where the epidural rate in most hospitals is 40 to 95 percent (depending on the setting) for first time mothers.
In a randomized control trial of 42 teenagers in Florida, none of the 22 patients in the hypnosis group experienced surgical intervention compared with 12 of the 20 patients in the control group (p=.000). Twelve patients in the hypnosis group experienced complications compared with 17 in the control group (p=.047).
Harmon, Hynan and Tyre reported more spontaneous deliveries, higher Agpar scores and reduced medication use in their study of 60 women.
Of the 45 Hypnosis for Childbirth clients, 38 delivered without the use of caesarean, forceps or vacuum, a rate of spontaneous birth of 84%.
This is a higher than average rate of normal birth for the general population of first time mothers.
In a randomized control trial of 42 teenagers in Florida, only 1 patient in the hypnosis group had a hospital stay of more than two days compared with 8 patients in the control group (p=.008).
McCarthy provided five 30-minute sessions to 600 women and found a virtual absence of postpartum depression, compared to the typical rates of 10 to 15 percent.
Women with a history of postpartum depression did not develop this condition, even though an estimated 50 percent eventually do. Harmon et al also reported lower depression scores in the hypnotically treated group.
It appears that a simple intervention, hypnotherapy, has far-reaching effects both medically and socially. Some, but not all, of the above studies are randomized, have large numbers, include control groups and demonstrate statistical significance. There remains, therefore, a clear need for more research, in the use of hypnosis for childbirth preparation.

Gemma and Simon,Cara Louise and Ryan Alexander from Oban
I was extremely nervous and anxious about giving birth again, I read about hypnobirthing and decided to book my course with Johan MacIver.
To be honest before I had done the course I was very sceptical but once I completed it, I was totally converted!
It was amazing how relaxed I was about giving birth. I was so confident I was actually looking forward to the experience.
Everyday for 6 weeks I listened to my CD's and practiced my breathing etc.
My labour began at 9am and continued until 7pm at night.
All day I stuck to the HypnoBirthing breathing and listened to CD's, I can say hand on heart I didn't experience any pain.
The midwives visited frequently but because I was so calm and relaxed and not in any pain or discomfort, we all thought that I wasn't that far into the labour.
I didn't plan to have a home birth. This thought was the furthest from my mind.
My plan was to go to the hospital once the labour really progressed, and I was going to take drugs if i really needed them.
When the midwife arrived to check on me around 7pm our baby was being born!!
He was born at home!!
It was the most amazing experience.
As a mother I am just overwhelmed with pride that I managed to give birth at home with no drugs and my baby is so calm and happy,
So all 'mums' and 'mums to be' take it from me Hypnobirthing is the way to do it!!!

Laura's birth story
I started surges about 11pm when 6 days past my Estimated due date.
Surges seemed very mild, even though 4 minutes apart, so I phoned the hospital.
The midwife didn’t sound convinced that I was in labour, as I was at that stage talking through surges, so she suggested I wait until surges were 3 minutes apart before coming in.
I carried on with my Rainbow Relaxation and the relaxation music and eventually fell asleep about 1am with my headphones on, while surges continued.
I woke up about 3.30am upon which my membranes released and I had one enormous surge, so we headed off to hospital (which was complicated by having to wake up our 3 year old and deliver him to our neighbour on the way).
I told my husband to drive as quickly as he could, as I didn’t think the birth was far off.
We made it to the hospital just after 5am and the midwife just looked at me as I came in the door and took me straight to a delivery suite, she told me she could see I was in ‘labour labour’!
We never did find out how far dilated I was, there wasn’t time to do anything much other than check in.
My husband put on the relaxation music and we gave the midwife our birth preferences sheet which she seemed quite happy with, she told me I was her second hypnobirthing mum that night.
I was still just about managing to keep going with the breathing during surges, but needed gas and air for the last part and probably less than 45 minutes later Hannah made her entry to the world.
While I didn’t manage the birth breathing as I had hoped I was able to use all the other hypnobirthing techniques during labour. I had no interventions or pain relief apart from the gas and air and no stitches.
I was very pleased with how well I managed the labour, being so relaxed during labour meant I was at home almost the whole time.
